The Chain Catshark

The Chain Catshark is frequently found from the coast of Massachusetts all the way down to the waters in Nicaragua. Also referred to as the Chain Dogfish, the Chain Catshark is a small shark known to have yellow and brown colored skin with brownish black chain-like markings. This Catshark species is generally harmless to human swimmers and boaters, although encounters with humans is uncommon because of the depth at which they frequently live.

One of the most unique features of the Chain Catshark is that its skin has fluorescent properties that were discovered by University of Florida Marine Biology professor, Mikhail Matz. Dr. Matz first discovered the fluorescent shark in the Gulf of Mexico in August 2005. Researchers are trying to determine the purpose of the Catsharks fluorescence. The Chain Catshark is a slender shark

Other species of Catshark include the Coral Catshark, Striped Catshark, Pygmy Ribbontail Catshark, Marbled Catshark, and Mottled Brown Marble Catshark.
